Animal Bites

According to Indiana Code IC 19-41-2-1 Section 52, all animal bites are to be reported to the local Health Department. If you are bitten by an animal, whether a pet, stray, or wild animal a report must be filed.

How to report an animal bite (if bitten by a dog, cat, or ferret):

  • You may report the incident by calling (812) 948-4726 Ext. 2, Option 1

Note (for after-hours exposures): If you are bitten by a wild animal or may have come into contact with a bat, and the animal is available for testing, please contact New Albany Floyd County Animal Control (812-948-5355) or New Albany Police Dispatch (812-948-5300) immediately. 

If the animal cannot be safely captured or is not available for testing, post-exposure prophylaxis must be started.  Immediately contact your local, emergency care facility.
