Septic Systems

The Floyd County Health Department has a number of pages dedicated to the planning, design, installation and maintenance of septic systems. This page is designed to help you find answers to septic system questions.

Provided below is the process to obtain a Septic System Permit in Floyd County:

Soil Report:

1. Homeowner or representative must have a soil test conducted by a certified soil scientist on a lot, tract, or acreage.  A contact list of Floyd County certified soil scientists and engineers will be provided below.

2. Homeowner or representative must contact the Floyd County Health Department to discuss the results of the soil report.

3. The Floyd County Health Department will discuss with the homeowner or representative the size of the home, number of bedrooms, and other site conditions, which will dictate whether the involved party will need to contact an engineer or Floyd County licensed septic installer.

Site Survey:

4. The homeowner or representative must fill out a site survey form at the Floyd County Health Department.  A contact list of Floyd County licensed septic installers will be provided upon request.

5. If the lot, tract, or acreage requires an engineer’s design, the engineer will submit the designs to the health department.

6. A licensed septic installer will contact the health department for a site survey on all septic systems whether or not they are designed by an engineer.

Issuance of Septic System Permit:

7. After the site survey has been approved by the Floyd County Health Department, the homeowner or representative must obtain a septic system permit from the health department before any installation of the septic system.

8. The licensed septic installer will contact the Floyd County Health Department before they begin to install the septic system on the lot, tract, or acreage, and will call the health department for a final inspection of the septic system before the system is back filled.
